  4. A stomach bug is linked to gastric tumors and ulcers

  9.     Could cancer be an infectious disease? In some cases the
  10. answer is at least partly yes. Viruses are thought to play a
  11. role in liver and uterine cancer and some forms of lymphoma. Now
  12. comes the news that bacteria may actually be a major culprit in
  13. the world's second most common malignancy: stomach cancer,
  14. which afflicts an estimated 700,000 a year worldwide.

  16.     In separate studies of 130,000 and 6,000 people, reported
  17. in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers from
  18. Stanford and Kuakini Medical Center in Honolulu found that
  19. people infected with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori were
  20. three to six times as likely to develop stomach cancer over a
  21. 20-year period as those who were not infected. "This is not just
  22. a little risk we're talking about," says Stanford's Julie
  23. Parsonnet, though she points out that not everyone infected with
  24. the bacterium develops cancer. Indeed, the bug, which may enter
  25. the body through dirty water or human contact, is extremely
  26. common: it is present in the gut of 50% of Americans and of up
  27. to 90% of people in poorer regions of Asia and Latin America.
  28. Researchers believe chronic inflammation, caused by the
  29. bacterium, combines with other risk factors, including a salty
  30. diet low in fresh fruit and vegetables, to cause the cancer.

  32.     The nefarious H. pylori has also been linked to ulcers and
  33. gastritis -- inflammation of the stomach lining. Parsonnet and
  34. others believe that people with chronic duodenal ulcers should
  35. consider a course of antibiotics to knock out the bug rather
  36. than rely on costly medications like Tagamet and Zantac, which
  37. treat the symptoms, not the cause. Meanwhile, studies are under
  38. way in Colombia and Mexico to determine if a similar strategy
  39. of antibiotics could play a role in cutting the world's
  40. incidence of stomach cancer.
